Automotive Exterior Lighting

Exterior lighting covers every LED on the outside of the vehicle: headlights, tail and brake lights, turn indicators, daytime running lights and illuminated trim or emblems. These assemblies often combine many LEDs across several functions, and each one is typically matched to a defined color and intensity specification before the product leaves the factory.

Exterior lighting is one of the most visible parts of a vehicle and one of the most heavily regulated. A mismatched headlight cluster or an out-of-tolerance indicator is obvious to a driver on sight and may also fall outside regulation limits. A variation that is subtle in a single LED can become clearly visible once the whole headlight is lit, and a value outside the permitted range can present a compliance concern rather than just a cosmetic one.

Feasa products can test automotive exterior lighting products at multiple points throughout the production process — from LEDs on PCBs through fully assembled parts to laboratory measurements. Where absolute, traceable characterization is needed, the Feasa LED Spectrometer can also provide a reference for the Feasa LED Analysers or deliver high-accuracy measurements directly in the production environment.

Find defects before customers do

A fault found at build costs far less than a return, recall or field repair

Protect brand reputation

A lighting defect that reaches the field reflects directly on the brand

Product consistency

Output should look the same from one unit to the next, and across a product range

Compliance

Specified and regulated products benefit from a documented result behind every unit

Objective, repeatable results

A measured value removes the subjectivity of a visual inspection

Keep pace with production

Fast, multichannel testing fits the line without becoming a bottleneck

Color & intensity testing

Confirms LEDs match one another and stay consistent from one unit to the next

CCT & chromaticity measurement

Reports color temperature and CIE coordinates for every LED

Fast test times

Every LED read in a single cycle, in-line or off-line

Sequence & pattern characterization

Profiles blinking, sweeping or animated LED sequences over time

Data logging & results output

Every reading captured and exported for records and analysis

Traceable, absolute measurement options

Common exterior lighting test scenarios

A closer look at how Feasa systems are applied to specific exterior lighting measurement challenges.

Testing headlight module color and intensity

Each function — low beam, high beam and cornering — is captured for CIE 1931 (x,y) and intensity, among other parameters, in a single acquisition.

Values are output via log file or the Feasa DLL. The customer compares them to their own reference values.

Verifying tail and brake lights

(x,y) chromaticity, intensity and wavelength are captured per LED. Values are output for every part.

The customer applies their own limits — for example ECE red and amber regions — to the logged data.

Characterizing the sequential-indicator sweep

Segments are captured in rapid succession, giving an output profile over time.

From this the customer can assess firing order and timing. The same method tests blinking LEDs, with frequency and duty-cycle output and a pattern-recognition feature.
